ABSTRACT A 1-year prospective community-based study of malaria during pregnancy was conducted in an area of seasonal and unstable malaria transmission in eastern Sudan. At a village antenatal clinic, 89 nonpregnant controls and 86 pregnant women were enrolled and followed every 2 weeks until 6 weeks after delivery. The incidence of Plasmodium falciparum infection was significantly higher among pregnant than control women (17.4% versus 5.6%) with no difference between primigravidae and multigravidae (22.2% versus 15.2%). There was no significant difference in the mean haemoglobin concentration between infected and uninfected mothers (9.1 ± 1.3 versus 9.5 ± 0.6 g/dL) but the mean birth weight of their babies was significantly lower (2.72 ± 0.26 versus 2.95 ± 0.05 kg) despite prompt case management of infected women.

Violacein extracted from Chromobacterium violaceum inhibits Plasmodium growth in vitro and in vivo.
Violacein is a violet pigment extracted from the gram-negative bacterium Chromobacterium violaceum. It presents bactericidal, tumoricidal, trypanocidal, and antileishmanial activities. We show that micromolar concentrations efficiently killed chloroquine-sensitive and -resistant Plasmodium falciparum strains in vitro; inhibited parasitemia in vivo, even after parasite establishment; and protect...
متن کاملApicoplast and mitochondrion in gametocytogenesis of Plasmodium falciparum.
Live cell imaging of human malaria parasites Plasmodium falciparum during gametocytogenesis revealed that the apicoplast does not grow, whereas the mitochondrion undergoes remarkable morphological development. A close connection of the two organelles is consistently maintained. The apicoplast and mitochondrion are not components of the male gametes, suggesting maternal inheritance.
متن کاملAntimalarial activity of a new stilbene glycoside from Parthenocissus tricuspidata in mice.
A novel stilbene glycoside [piceid-(1-->6)-beta-d-glucopyranoside; PBG] from Parthenocissus tricuspidata was tested in vivo against Plasmodium berghei. PBG exhibited significant blood schizontocidal activity in a 4-day early infection, a repository evaluation, and an established infection, with a significant mean survival time comparable to that obtained with the standard drug, chloroquine (5 m...
متن کاملThe antimalarial trioxaquine DU1301 alkylates heme in malaria-infected mice.
The in vivo alkylation of heme by the antimalarial trioxaquine DU1301 afforded covalent heme-drug adducts that were detected in the spleens of Plasmodium sp.-infected mice. This result indicates that the alkylation capacities of trioxaquines in mammals infected with Plasmodium strains are similar to that of artemisinin, a natural antimalarial trioxane-containing drug.
متن کاملStatistical model to evaluate in vivo activities of antimalarial drugs in a Plasmodium cynomolgi-macaque model for Plasmodium vivax malaria.
Preclinical animal models informing antimalarial drug development are scarce. We have used asexual erythrocytic Plasmodium cynomolgi infections of rhesus macaques to model Plasmodium vivax during preclinical development of compounds targeting parasite phospholipid synthesis. Using this malaria model, we accumulated data confirming highly reproducible infection patterns, with self-curing parasit...
